What are the main electronic components inside media players ?

Let me introduce what are the most high-tech building blocks for the multi-media players and the high-tech musical/video devices. Basically I am an electronics engineer who is somewhat enthusiastic in writing about the central electronic building blocks inside these devices.

Electronically, there are three main building blocks:

1. Central processing unit to handle signal flows at various levels.
2. A/D and D/A converters (stand for Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog) to handle signal conversion between these two formats (analog and digital formats).
3. Memory: Most likely it is non-volatile memory which still retains all information even when the power is down or battery is removed from the device.

All of these three things are made of Silicon, a cheap element found in sand. By the way, these three building blocks are most likely composed of CMOS, which stand for Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor. It is the electronic material made up of Silicon in bulk.
